We're bringing back Berwyn's Fourth of July fireworks! A gift to celebrate our 10th anniversary
It’s been 10 years since the World’s Largest Laundromat re-opened its iconic doors after being leveled by a fire. And that is a reason to celebrate and to make a huge announcement.
At 13,500 square feet and more than 300 machines, this Berwyn business lives up to its name. But it’s the laundromat’s green-energy initiatives and community-based philanthropy that has landed it in newspapers and on newscasts on every continent except Antarctica.
“We’re in a great community,” owner Tom Benson said. “We have wonderful and loyal customers and employees. When we burned down in 2004, they gave us the belief and the motivation to rebuild, and to make this place better than it was before. And here we are, 10 years later a shining example of the power of the American small business.”
Benson remembers that when the laundromat re-opened in January 2006, there was a line of customers out the door waiting to get in. “We love our customers and they love us back. We have built an emotional connection with them, something you wouldn’t expect from a place you do your laundry.”
From free doughnuts in the mornings and a weekly pizza night, to an endless parade of entertainers and even a summer reading program for neighborhood kids, it’s no wonder the community feels attached. For example, the summer reading program (Read-to-Ride) has netted 130,000 books read and given away about 200 bikes.
The week-long celebration concluded Sunday, Jan. 17, with catered food, giveaways and prizes, non-stop clowns and entertainers, and an announcement that is sure to get oohs and aahs from the Berwyn community come July. We're bringing back Berwyn's Fourth of July fireworks!
It's been about 7 years since Berwyn had a display for Independence Day, and we're proud to partner with Mayor Lovero to bring it back.
